Oak Knoll Hospital is demolished

Dozens of onlookers gathered on Friday April 8, 2011, to watch as the Oak Knoll Naval Hospital was demolished. 800 pounds of dynamite were used for the explosion, that brought down the buildings, including an 11-story hospital, in less than a minute.

Oak Knoll hospital opened in 1942, during World War II, and served thousands of military personnel until it closed in 1996.

The abandoned naval base and hospital had long been a concern of neighbors for its neglected buildings, potential for fires and attraction to squatters.

Not as loud as the cheers that went up! (Even if everyone was really sad to see it go.)
